Three New Buildings Due to Enhance U of S Standing Among Institutions
Construction of the University of Scranton's new science building and faculty residence and renovation of the library will rank the university with outstanding institutions of its kind in the country.
Architect drawings of the three buildings, as released in the university's "Alum-News" publication, show that the structures will include the latest designs. The buildings will be constructed to remedy the poorly housed conditions of the science departments and the overcrowded library and faculty residence.
A $1,500,000 fund drive, scheduled to start in February, will meet the cost of the three buildings. The drive is the first phase of the university's proposed $5 million expansion program.
While no date has been set for the start of construction, the science building will be built first at a cost of $966,500. Construction of the faculty residence will cost $320,000 while renovation of the Scranton Estate home into a library will run $220,000.
The drive's planning board, headed by Edward J. Lynett, editor and publisher of The Times, at the present time is holding sessions to make preliminary plans for the campaign.
The science building, to be built on grounds of the Scranton estate, is of contemporary design and will contain science, chemistry and biology laboratories, in addition to classrooms.
The faculty residence will include temples, recreation and dining rooms for the Jesuit teaching faculty.
Renovation of the Scranton ancestral home into a library will maintain the beautiful interior and exterior. The library will be a two-story addition in the rear of the home. Seminar and reading rooms will be included.
The overall expansion program, as announced last June, will provide for nine buildings and the remodeling of the library.
Ellis M. Oppenheim, vice-president of the Scranton Dry Goods Co.; John A. Noble, president of The Globe Store, and Judge Michael J. Eagen are co- chairmen of the planning board. John B. McDade, general manager of Heidelberg Coal Co., is chairman of the special gifts committee.
