Scranton Gives Palatial Home to University
Announcement of the plans of Worthington Scranton, prominent industrialist and a member of a family after which Scranton was named, to present to the University of Scranton his palatial home and adjoining real estate holdings in the heart of the city, was made at a meeting of the trustees of the University yesterday.
The property, which the University is to receive from Mr. Scranton, is valued at more than $200,000 and has a high stone wall erected around it on four thoroughfares.
Bishop William J. Hafey, head of the Scranton Catholic Diocese, who is president of the university, expressed thanks to Mr. Scranton, as did Attorney M.J. Martin, chairman of the board. Part of the Scranton property will be used for the university's physical education programs at present.
