U of S Athletic Plaza Named for Rev. Galvin
The Rev. William J. Byron, SJ, University of Scranton president, announced Monday that the recently completed outdoor athletic plaza adjacent to the University Student Center has been designated by the Board of Trustees as the Galvin Terrace in honor of former U of S president Rev. Aloysius C. Galvin. SJ.
Father Byron said that he expects the formal dedication ceremonies will take place in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Board of Trustees on Oct. 9.
In a letter to the university community, Father Byron said, "It is appropriate that this sports complex should be so named in view of the many contributions made to the university by Father Galvin during his presidency here and also in view of his own great interest in and participation in sports."
Father Galvin, who served as president of the U of S from 1965-1970, was a star basketball player while an undergraduate student at Loyola College of Baltimore.

team, will also provide needed athletic facilities for the school's growing student population. The attractive complex contains six tennis courts, two combination basketball and volleyball courts
and recreational and lounging areas, surrounded by attractive landscaping and shrubbery. University students will be able to use the complex when school resumes next month.
Father Galvin, who currently serves as a student counselor and mathematics teacher at Georgetown Preparatory School, was born in Baltimore. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946, graduated from Loyola College, Baltimore, in 1948 and entered the Society of Jesus that same year. He pursued philosophical and theological studies at Woodstock College, Md., and was ordained to the priesthood in 1957.
He served as academic vice president and dean of Loyola College, Baltimore, from 1959 until his appointment as University of Scranton president on Aug. 24, 1965.
While U of S president, Father Galvin was a member of the boards of directors of Northeastern Pennsylvania Educational Television Association, Scranton Chamber of Commerce, Lackawanna United Fund, Scranton Chapter American Red Cross and Scranton Philharmonic Orchestra. He was also a member of numerous other civic and community organizations in the Scranton area.
