Exhibit, convocation events to highlight new U of S library
The University of Scranton's new library is both the subject of special gallery exhibit and an upcoming academic convocation and dedication that will feature the Librarian of Congress.
The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Memorial Library, which had been under construction since July, 1990, is designed to house some 330,000 volumes and was opened for daily use on June 8. It will be dedicated on Sept. 25.
The University Art Gallery began its 1992-93 season last Sunday with a month-long exhibit, "Genesis: The Weinberg Memorial Library," that traces the design of the new structure.
Richard Leonori of the Scranton architectural firm of Leung Hemmler Camayd, library designers, helped to open the exhibit. Leonori was the primary designer and project manager for the library and is a preservation consultant to the state Historic and Museum Commission.
The exhibit traces the evolution from idea to form and examines the design processes. Architectural and shop drawings, site and floor plans, documentary photos, and material samples record the four-year effort to create a functional and attractive edifice.
Competition panels with design proposals for the Scranton Heritage Room mural, a 36-panel art frieze are part of the exhibit, which runs through Sept. 25. Admission is free.
On Friday, Sept. 25, James H. Billington, Librarian of the U.S. Congress, will be principal speaker at the dedication of the new library, which was described as a "milestone" in the history of the university by Jesuit Father J. A. Panuska, university president.
"No other event in the ten years of my presidency has been as important to the academic future Of the university..." he said. "Having the Librarian of Congress as our speaker is not only a great honor... (but) symbolizes the interrelationships among libraries around the nation that are now possible through technology like that incorporated in the Weinberg library."
Billington, an author, historian and educator, will receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters at the convocation/dedication. He
is the 13th Librarian of Congress in the nation's history and a native Pennsylvania. A graduate of Princeton, he earned his doctorate at Oxford University where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He taught history at Harvard and Princeton and was director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.
The dedication is being held Sept. 25 to allow graduate and undergraduate students to participate. The convocation, open to the public, will be held outside the library building near the foot of the University Commons. In case of rain the program will be held in the John Long Center.
