Galvin Terrace: Signal Event
Yesterday's Trustee Day festivities marking the dedication of Galvin Terrace were a signal event in the recent history of the University, for the recreational and campus beautification project represents the first newly-constructed addition to the physical plant in a decade. As such, it is indicative of an attitude which sees the University playing an aggressive role in going after the top students of a declining college age population in the years ahead. We see the planned linden St. Commons project as another example of this new attitude, which implies a healthy balance between this University's need for continued growth and that providing a quality education and facilities for its students. While requiring large expenditures, such a trend is clearly encouraging in the long-run, given the apparent concern for student needs and wishes.
As for Galvin Terrace itself, it is only fair to give credit where credit is due — to an administration often besieged with criticism while it was forced to contend with weather and construction difficulties. Long a subject of controversy because of delays and cost overruns, the complex has already proved its worth during the fall recreational season.
Special congratulations should be extended to Rev. Aloysius Galvin, S, J., now a guidance counselor at Georgetown Prep High School in Maryland, who is honored by virtue of the terrace for his years of service as president of this University from 1965-70. Galvin
headed this college during the difficult era of the antiwar protest, when altercations between students and police peaked. His steady hand at the helm kept the University on a forward course during this strenuous period, thus laying the base for much of the growth
which has taken place in the seven years since his departure.
While the dedication of Galvin Terrace obviously doesn't right all the problems with this University, it is a major step in the right direction and one in which the entire University can take pride.
