THE SUNDAY TIMES, JULY 31, 1977—SCRANTON, PA. A-3
Completion Expected by November
U of S Project Moving Ahead
When University of Scranton students return for classes this September, they will see construction well under way on an outdoor athletic sports and recreational plaza in the area adjacent to the U of S Student Center.
Construction on the long-awaited recreational field began June 28 and university officials hope to have the project completed about Nov. 1.
The facility is situated on a parcel of land bounded by Linden Street, Monroe Avenue, Mulberry Street, and Hitchcock Court. Prior to construction, the area had housed three basketball courts, a volleyball court, and a grassy area that was used by the U of S football team for practice. The field was not equipped with lights, so all activities had to be scheduled during the day and events had to be postponed or rescheduled when the early winter darkness brought a premature end to some football practice sessions on intramural contests.
When construction is complete, the new facility will include six tennis courts, two combination volleyball-basketball courts, recreational-lounging, and sports waiting areas, fencing and lighting.
According to John S. Flanagan, vice president for business and management at the U of S, the facility will be constructed using a three-tier effect to take advantage of the natural topography of the
land, and will include the installation of tan-and-red brick pavement in the "plaza-commons" area. Outdoor benches and tables will be available for those using the facility and shrubbery plantings will be used to landscape the recreational area.
Funds for the facility will come from money raised by the university's Annual Fund Drive. The 1977 fund-raising effort, which will climax with the annual President's Club Dinner Dance on Oct. 1, has a goal of $250,000. Campaign officials are confident of pushing over the top and reporting a successful drive at the dinner. Funds raised by the University of Scranton's national capital campaign, "Commitments to Excellence," also will be used in the modernization of other campus facilities. One of the areas of commitment outlined in the capital development program was the campus and local community. The U of S plans to expend $900,000 in this area, with $500,000 targeted for the university's new School of Management opening this September, and $250,000 toward the Office of Continuing Education, officials said. This new office, under the direction of Victor DeSantis, serves all divisions of the university by attracting non- traditional students to a full range of part and full-time continuing education programs.
An additional $150,000 will be expended for improvements and modernization in the physical facilities of the campus. Among the priorities are the beautification of the campus grounds, Student Center Theater, additional parking areas, and others.
The capital program calls for the modernization of the 400-seat Student Center Theater in order to strengthen the quality of students' cultural life, enhance the production of the U of S drama department, and better serve the local community by bringing to the stage professional theater companies.
A total of $1.5 million in pledges has been received to date by the capital campaign, which recently opened its financial institutions gifts phase.
