Dr. Louis D. Mitchell
Louis D. Mitchell, Ph.D., joined the English faculty at The University of Scranton in 1961 and taught in the department until his death in 1989. Though blind, Dr. Mitchell had a prestigious career in education after earning his bachelor's and master's degrees from Fordham University and Ph.D. from New York University. A gifted musician, Dr. Mitchell studied harmony, composition, piano, violin and the organ at the New York Institute for the Education of the Blind and went on to compose and perform throughout his lifetime. Dr. Mitchell regularly lectured internationally and his scholarship covered topics including African American literature, 18th-century literature and theatre, and received numerous accolades including being named to the 1976 edition of "Who's Who Among Black Americans."
