German Leaf from a Breviary ca. 1150-1200

There are vertical ascenders on the letters d and h. An ascender is a part of letter that extends above the main part (example d). A descender is a part of a letter that extends below the level of the base of a word (example p).  This breviary shows musical notation mostly in the left column.
